Why I started my YouTube channel

YouTube. I used to spend hours every week watching videos, wondering where on earth the time went. All that time watching makeup tutorials, and I still can’t draw on winged eyeliner. I felt ripped off!

In all my hours of browsing, I noticed one thing. No one was talking about the taboo subject of money, or getting jobs, or keeping on top of your university workload. This stuff is important, and surely there has to be an audience for it?

Well, I can confirm, there is! I started my self-titled YouTube channel back in January and so far, my videos have been viewed almost 50,000 times.

It’s really easy to start a YouTube channel. I started with a basic camera (although a phone does the job these days) and a voice.

And trust me, that’s all you need. It is easy to get lost in the crowd of beauty bloggers, gamer’s and prank channels, but we are all unique people with our own ideas and experiences.

Find that one thing you’re passionate about and start talking about it.  Maybe you’ll go viral and suddenly have the world at your feet, or maybe not. What matters is that you’re doing something you enjoy. Find that niche, make it your own, and share it with the world.

Starting a YouTube channel has brought me so many opportunities. I scored a job in my field. I’ve started working with the Griffith Library Blog, which has been an awesome experience. I’ve written for the student magazine Getamungstit, and I’m currently working with Griffith University on a really cool project.

But the best part, honestly? Getting comments and messages from viewers, telling me that my videos have helped them in some way.

You can make a difference. Even if that difference is putting a smile on someone’s face at the end of a crap day.

So… What are you waiting for?
