Today is International Women’s Day!

Today is International Women’s Day – this year’s theme: #PledgeForParity.

Did you know the earliest known version for a celebration of women and equality was held on February 28th, 1909 in New York?  It was a protest against working conditions.

As part of the peace movement during World War I, Russian women observed the first International Women’s Day (IWD) on the last Sunday of February – which happened to be March 8th in the Gregorian calendar.  The United Nations began celebrating IWD on March 8th, 1975, during International Women’s Year.

In December 1977, the UN General Assembly officially declared 8th of March each year to be International Women’s Day.

So today, take a moment to think about some of the amazing women who have been in your life: mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts, friends, strangers that helped out – recognise that they deserve respect and equality.  Create a better future for children to not know gender discrimination around the world.

  1. That was a very interesting bit of history (I did not know all of that, although I do remember IWD 1975 : )) and a very nice perspective. Things have changed quite a bit since 1975, sometimes positive sometimes not, but the basics you mention still prevail. Yaay for #iwd2016.
