EndNote and Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac: Issues with Cite While You WritePosted: August 26, 2015
Are you using a Mac with Microsoft Office and EndNote? The latest version of Microsoft Office for the Mac was recently launched. Office 2016 provides users with some new functions BUT applications, such as EndNote, that interact with Word, are not necessarily compatible. This is the case with the Cite While You Write functionality from EndNote.
Thomson Reuters (providers of EndNote) is currently working on a patch for EndNote that will re-enable that compatibility. According to their website this free update to EndNote X7 will be ready later in the year. As these issues will be ongoing in the short term we advise Mac users to not upgrade to Office 2016 until this patch is ready.
Thomson Reuters has provided further information including workarounds for using these two products together if you have already upgraded to Office 2016. If you are using Office 2016 and EndNote CWYW, it is still possible to insert EndNote temporary citations into a Word document, then save a copy of that document as a Rich Text Format (RTF) document, and use EndNote’s Tools (Format Paper command) to create a second paper with formatted citations and bibliography. An article providing detailed instructions is available on the previous link, look for it on the right hand side of the page.
